Haapsalu Episcopal Bishop’s Castle and Cathedral

Haapsalu Episcopal Bishop’s Castle and Cathedral

A day trip from Tallinn will get you off the beaten path to see the beautiful rural Estonia. If you hop on the local bus and head 101 km (63 miles) away from Tallinn you end up in the small Baltic coastal resort Town of Haapsalu home of the Haapsalu Episcopal Bishop’s Castle and Cathedral ruins.

Built to be the main residence of the Bishop of Saare-Laane in the 13th century. It is the site of a famous legend from the 15th century, that on moonlit August nights the shape of a Lady in White appears on the inside wall of the chapel. According to this legend, it is a young woman who was in love with the chapel’s abbot and was walled in alive as punishment.

Today, ruins of the turreted tower, most of the outer wall and some of the moat remain.

It was off-season so Haapsalu was a ghost town.  The castle and cathedral ruins, as well as the museum, were closed for renovation until 2019. That was disappointing but exploring the exterior of the ruins and the charming and quaint town was all we needed to have a great day.
